New Paper Merchant Does Business the Old-Fashioned Way

Chaplik Trading Co. LLC, based in Northbrook, Ill., just outside of Chicago, is a 13-month-old company dedicated to delivering the personalized service that is getting harder and harder to come by in the 21st Century.
“I love what I do. I like people, and I’m honest,” says Barry Chaplik, principal of the company. “I like doing business the old-fashioned way.” He is genuinely enthusiastic about the paper industry, and committed to going the extra mile for his customers.
Barry Chaplik is a veteran of the paper industry, and formed Chaplik Trading just more than a year ago in affiliation with Hylton Paper Co., Bell Mawr, Pa., near Philadelphia. Working with Hylton, Chaplik serves clients on the East Coast from an 80,000-sq.-ft. warehouse with 1,000 tons of paper in inventory.
For customers elsewhere in the United States, Chaplik stocks a wide variety of printing papers and folding carton grades from the major North American mills at warehouses across the country, and even does business overseas. One of the company’s special services is importing and exporting papers.
“I have relationships with paper mills all over the world,” Mr. Chaplik notes. The company also maintains relationships with several sources for converting, and promises quick turnaround on orders for sheets cut in special or non-standard sizes. This may be especially useful for digital printers that often provide a 12×18″ format for bleed, or European size standards. The company also sells paper in rolls.
In terms of service, Mr. Chaplik says he enjoys working in a consultative capacity. He monitors spot paper markets, and especially the pulp market, which is a reliable indicator of what prices are going to be about six months into the future.
“As the price fluctuates on pulp, so does the final paper cost,” he says. “We follow market trends month to month so we can give our customers a heads-up on any price changes.”
Mr. Chaplik notes that the larger mergers among printing paper manufacturers over recent years has eliminated significant capacity in North America to reduce over-production, and stabilize paper pricing. In addition, the federal government’s recent investigation of claims that Chinese, North Korean, and Indonesian manufacturers have been dumping paper at below cost in U.S. markets may result in an import tariff of $50 per ton on papers from these nations. Though both of these measures are intended to ensure the viability of the nation’s paper industry, printers may find bargain prices for either domestically-produced or imported paper few and far between. However, printers also are less likely to face the allocations-limits on the volume available for purchase-that some paper mills had in place about 18 months ago.
Chaplik Trading also offers programs for buying paper trim and similar waste paper, which the company sells back to the mills for use in recycled grades, and will even furnish printers with balers for this material. In addition, the company purchases printers’ excess inventory.
Beyond simply supplying just about any kind of paper a printer might need, Chaplik can help with technical support, as well as sales and staff educational programs.
“I take pride in what I do,” Mr. Chaplik says, “and as an expert, I believe I have the knowledge and skills and determination to satisfy any customer’s needs, from newspaper, magazine and book publishers, to greeting card and catalog companies. I enjoy solving problems, and as most people in the industry know, problems do occur. I developed [Chaplik] to offer more comprehensive services, greater resources, and many more options to better serve my customers on a day-to-day basis.”
